Dilution Experiment

Hypothesis:

. Which test tube is the most Dilute?                                                                                                               . . Which test tube will be the least Dilute?

Dilution is when there is a weak concentration of an element in a solution/mixture. When there is less compared to the majority.
Concentration: When something is more particles of something in a solution/mixture.

Dilution series:
Aim: To make a dilution series to investigate concentration.
Equipment: A Potassium Permanganate crystal, six large test tubes, tweezers, a plastic transfer pipette, test tube rack, 10 ml measuring cylinder.

Hypothesis:
Which test tube would be the most dilute? -The test tube that will be the most dilute would be test tube 6.

Which test tube would be the most concentrated? - The first test tube.

What did you do? - We put the crystals into the first test tube and distributed the liquid to the next. And repeated the process for the other tubes until the water got lighter and lighter and lighter.

Was your hypothesis correct? - Yes, my hypothesis was correct. After distributing 5 ml to every next tube, the last tube ended up being lighter than everything else.

Which was more concentrated and which was the least? - The most concentrated was the first test tube and the least was the sixth test tube.

How do you know? - The solution was distributed between the test tubes, the amount becoming less between the test tube with each distribution.

Filtration Experiment

Aim: To separate a mixture we have made using Filtration

Hypothesis: I think that they will not separate because they are both liquids and will be hard to separate but I do think that they might separate due to some videos I have watched.'

Observation
- When we mixed the two liquids together, the mixture turned into a cloudy darker blue, we started seeing tiny pieces of solids form in the liquid and the two liquids became a solid and a liquid. after filtering the mixture separated into a clear liquid and a blue solid.

Conclusion
- When mixing Copper sulfate and Sodium carbonate together, the Copper and Sodium switch places which turns the two liquids into Copper carbonate and Sodium sulfate, and since Copper carbonate is insoluble, mixing it with Sodium sulfate and then filtering it can cause the two substances to separate from each other.

Can Experiment

This week in Chemical, we are learning about matter.

Heated Can and Cold water Experiment

We have conducted an experiment using Cans with hot water and buckets with cold water to see what would happen when you put a heated can in cold water.
We started by boiling the Can with hot water and waiting for lots of steam to come out of the top, we then put the Can with boiling water in the cold water and it immediately crushed the Can.
How did this happen?
When we heated the water in the can, it turned into steam. When you put the can upside down in cold water, the steam condenses and the Can fill with hot gas, contracts because of the changes in pressure and temperature.

The Piano

1. Where was the Piano invented and by who?, The piano was invented by Bartolomeo Cristofori (1655-1731) of Italy. Cristofori was unsatisfied by the lack of control that musicians had over the volume level of the harpsichord. He is credited for switching out the plucking mechanism with a hammer to create the modern piano in around the year 1700.
The origins of the Piano:The Story of the Piano's Invention ...

2. What did the first Piano look like?, The Piano Looks Like a HarpsichordWhen a key is pressed, a plectrum attached to a long strip of wood called a jack plucks the string to make music. This system of strings and soundboard, and the overall structure of the instrument resemble those that can be found in a piano.

3. What is the difference between a Piano and Keyboard?, Piano is an instrument with one original sound, where as a "Keyboard" has various different sounds and keys.

4. What have you enjoyed about learning the Piano/keyboard. What have you found challenging?, the one thing I've been finding difficult is trying to play with my left hand.

Workshop 5: Creating the illusion of the other Mother

1. - Looks like normal mum with button eyes
- dresses like the real mother
- softer/rounder edges - hip, head, knees, elbows
- clothes are basic design, no patterns, covers most of her body

2. - Head & nose - pointier/sharp,
- Sleeves get shorter
- Addition of red to colour palette
- Starting to get beatle shape from apron
- long baggy pants keep idea of softness.

3. - All weight has moved to hips/bum - accents beatle shape of dress
- red, black, white, more pattern, better/tighter fit, more skin showing.
- getting  longer & pointier - stretched neck, pointed elbows, shorter hair, pointed head & nose.

4. - Scissor/thing like - very skinny
- huge height increase - compared to oven
pointy head, elbows
- high heels
- full back outfit - red shoes
- little/ no fat left on body, lots of skin showing

5. - skinless, needle like, no face, paper thin
- has grown extra legs, fractured bones.
- looks alien - not human like
- clothes are more like tattered rags
- has become hunched over

* Gradual changes over time.
- takes more time to notice
- looks can be deceiving
- changes as Coraline perception of her changes.

* Start - colour is warm, inviting, by the end is green, unnatural & creepy

Workshop 2: Linking themes to the impact of Angles, Movement and Shots.

* High angle - Make the character 'Other Wybie' look small, weak and vulnerable.

* POV - Other Mother - dominant & powerful

* Medium shot - gives us some idea of the background but not fall

* Audience feels - powerful, we are looking down on Wybie through Other Mothers POV.
- sad/worried for Wybie - he looks small, sad, innocent
- first character in Other World to suggest something is not right

* Directors Purpose - Make us feel sorry for Wybie.
- Makes audience think that maybe the Other Mother isn't so nice - Foreshadowing.

In the shot with the Other Wybie and the Other Mother, high angle shots are used effectively to show the theme ' Looks can be Deceiving! This is demonstrated through a angle shot from the point of view of the Other Mother. She is looking down the front porch steps at a scared Other Wybie. This makes the audience feel sorry/worried for Wybie and makes the Other Mother seem powerful. The purpose of these scene was to make the audience think that maybe the Other Mother isn't so nice after all. Combined with the use of lighting, Wybie is in a warm light but surrounded by darkness, the Director has created an atmosphere of caution - something is not right. This reminds the viewer of a later scene where Coraline is looking up at the Other Mother in horror as she throws her through a magical portal into a locked room. This Shows that Looks Can Be Deceiving because the Other Mother wasn't nice like Coraline first thought.

Within this shot with Coraline and the Doll (also known as the Other Mothers Spy), The Dutch tilt is used effectively to show that 'Looks Can be Deceiving.

Sustainability and Maths Reflection.

1. Summary of learning
For Sustainability, we learnt about multiple problem within our ecosystem to prove that the Earth was under Pressure, referring to the book we had to read. These were problems that ranged from Over Population to endangered species, poachers, pollution etc. We also watched a couple of clips for COVID-19, learning at the same time how to avoid it.

Music Genre Study Reflection

History of the Pop genre

Our task for Music was to pick a Genre that we were interested in, and then were set to do research about this specific Genre and find out about its history. In my group were Nate, Tiaoa, Eugene and I who decided to do Pop as our Genre. We chose to do this Genre because as you know, most well known Singers around the world are Pop Singers and wanted to find what was so special about Pop. Something I learnt that was new for me is that Pop was the Genre known for producing most's hits. Most Pop songs share a certain thing called the Pop - Music Formula, because they all have a good rhythm, a catchy melody and are always at ease to remember and sing along to.

Workshop 1: Unpacking Themes and Ideas?, Coraline Film Study

Theme/Idea - Something that links throughout the story

'Looks can be deceiving' - things aren't always what they seem

Example 1: The Beldam/The other Mother - She appears to be good in the start/but is revealed to be an evil soul devouring metal spider demon - Shows theme because the other mother changes gradually over time so that Coraline & audience don't notice - Important to the story because it helps the audience understand  Coralines choice when she realises that having everything perfect won't make her happy.

Example 2: Other World vs Real World - The other world is a perfect web/trap to catch Coraline, whereas the real world is boring but safe - Shows theme because even though the other world seems better in every way, the real world is actually better/safer because it isn't a trap - Important to help audience understand why Coraline goes back to the real world.

S - tatement - In Coraline, themes and ideas are used effectively.

E - vidence - For instance, the theme 'Looks can be deceiving' is shown through the character 'Other Mother'. The 'Other Mother' starts kind, but is revealed to be a soul devouring demon

eX - planation -  This makes the audience feel that we shouldn't trust things or people that seem perfect at first glance.

eX - planation - this was done to make the audience feel weary or develop a sense of caution towards new situations. Coinciding with this is the use of colour to show the 'Other Mother' is becoming more evil. At the start she is is surrounded by warm colours that makes us feel safe, but by the end it is dark with neon green which makes her seem dangerous.

Y - our Link - This Theme is also shown through the changes in the "other world' as it is revealed to be a spider web designer to catch Coraline.

Baking Scones

Scones

Ingredients

3 c Flour
6 t Baking Powder
1/4 t salt
75g Cold butter
1 to 1 1/2 c milk

Method

1. Sift flour, baking powder, and salt into a bowl
2. Cut butter in small cubes. Rub the butter into the flour, baking powder, salt gently with fingertips until it resembles fine breadcrumbs
3. Add milk gradually. Mix quickly with a knife to form a soft dough (the amount of milk required depends on a number of factors)
4. Lightly knead the scone dough a few times on tabletop
5. Place baking paper onto an oven tray
6. Cut scone dough into 12 even sized pieces
7. Place onto the lined oven tray. Keep them close together towards the centre of the tray
8. Brush with milk
9. Bake at 180c for about 10 minutes

Last Friday me and some other students had a practical at Home Economics, and entered the kitchen to see scone ingredients and a recipe. At my table I worked with Tyson, May and Sierra, and we were instructed to Mis en place which means to prepare all the ingredients and equipment needed to cook or bake the meal.

In my opinion, my team and I worked really well together most of the time. We all helped each other out when we needed it, individually doing our own thing. But there was some disturbance from other teams that made the lesson go down hill a bit. But in the end it all worked out with a good result from every team.

So to start the process, we first had to sift the flour, baking powder and salt but in doing this we had to add height to aerate the dry ingredients so that there was no lumps or chunks of flour (etc).

Next we had to cut the butter into small cubes and add it to the mixture of dry ingredients and gently rubbed it with fingertips only to form fine bread crumbs, due to our palms being too warm for the butter where as fingertips are the coolest or coldest part of our hand.

After we grated some cheese and also added it to the mixture, but making sure to mix it in very well with a knife in circular motion, slowly heading into the middle which is called the "well". Then gradually adding milk to the mixture which brought the whole thing together. And leaving some extra milk behind to glaze the scones in before going into the oven.

Then we took the mixture out of the bowl and started kneading it for a while on a tabletop (make sure to flour the table first). Then rolling it into a fine shape, we cut the scones into 12 even pieces, (2 scones for each person). Then placing all 12 scones on a oven tray with baking paper, remembering to place them quite close together (about a centimetre apart) towards the centre of the tray, but not forgetting to brush and glaze with milk before finally placing it in the oven for about 10 minutes at 180c. Once finished, they should come out looking beautiful and golden and will know they're perfect if feeling soft. Then its all yours to enjoy with the choice of putting margarine in it.
