Starfish Poem | Social Studies

The main message of this poem is:

 About the Starfish and we focused on how this poem was related to the real-life world. The poem resembled how the old man was helping the economy or the ecosystem itself by picking up starfish that was washed across the shore and releasing it into the ocean so that they don't dry up and die.



THE  STARFISH  POEM

Once upon a time there was a wise man 

who used to go to the ocean 

to do his writing. 

He had a habit of walking 

on the beach 

before he began his work. 

One day he was walking along 

the shore. 

As he looked down the beach, 

he saw a human 

figure moving like a dancer. 

He smiled to himself to think 

of someone who would 

dance to the day. 

So he began to walk faster 

to catch up. 

As he got closer, he saw 

that it was a young man 

and the young man wasn't dancing, 

but instead he was reaching 

down to the shore, 

picking up something 

and very gently throwing it 

into the ocean. 

As he got closer he called out, 

"Good morning! What are you doing?" 

The young man paused, 

looked up and replied, 

"Throwing starfish in the ocean." 

"I guess I should have asked, 

why are you throwing starfish in the ocean?" 

"The sun is up and the tide is going out. 

And if I don't throw them in they'll die." 

"But, young man, don't you realize that 

there are miles and miles of beach 

and starfish all along it. 

You can't possibly make a difference!" 

The young man listened politely. 

Then bent down, picked up another starfish 

and threw it into the sea, 

past the breaking waves and said- 

"It made a difference for that one."

Galvanising

Galvanization or galvanizing is the process of applying a protective zinc coating to steel or iron, to prevent rusting. The most common method is hot-dip galvanizing, in which the parts are submerged in a bath of molten hot zinc. 

Galvanizing protects from rust in a number of ways: It forms a barrier that prevents corrosive substances from reaching the underlying steel or iron. ... The zinc protects its base metal by corroding before iron. The zinc surface reacts with the atmosphere to form a compact, adherent patina that is insoluble in rainwater.

Parihaka

Today for Social Studies we have started on a new unit, we are now focusing on Parihaka. Parihaka is a community in the Taranaki region of New Zealand, which is located between Mount Taranaki and the Tasman Sea. We had to explore what happened, what were the impacts and the songs made for Parihaka. The song we were given to explore was called "Parihaka" by Tim Finn.

What is the main message of the song, the main message was to feel empathy for those who had lost their lives & those who suffered. Mainly woman who were raped, but the song also sent messages such as " I know Te Whiti will never be defeated" to give faith and uplift those who might of felt low.

Message:

The song represented how some people really felt about the War and how people would rather prefer peace then war and that the Government should give a chance. That why people would sing this song to spread the message for people to give Peace a Chance.

Gallipoli

Gallipoli Campaign
The Gallipoli Campaign is a campaign that took place from 19 Feb 1915 to 9 Jan 1916. The purpose of the Gallipoli campaign was to make an opening through Dardanelles for Allied Ships to come through and capture the Capital of the Ottoman Empire, Constantinople. Their goal also included completely throwing the Ottoman Empire out of the war. The campaign went on for 8 months, resulting in the Ottoman Empire winning.

Heating Zinc Oxide

Aim: Is to see what change happens when we heat Zinc Oxide?

Equipment: Bunsen Burner, Heat mat, tripod, safety Glasses, Crucible, Crucible Holder and Zinc Oxide

Results/Observation: The Zinc Oxide was white in the beginning when cool but as it heated up the Zinc started to unfold a yellow-ish green colour but as it cooled back down the Zinc had returned to its original white colour.

Discussion: When heated, the Electrons in Zinc move to other Levels, making it change colour.
